4 Unique Yoga Experiences Worth Traveling For

For many, travel is a way to remove the stresses of everyday life—the chores, the meetings, the screens. It’s a way to decompress and find focus, or at least a few moments of relative stillness. In some ways, the benefits of getting out of your routine and seeing a new (or old favorite) place mirror those of yoga. As any semi-regular yogi will tell you, taking the time to relax into a flow or incorporate a couple of poses into your day greatly improves both your mental and physical states. There are even scientific studies that prove yoga reduces stress.

So when you combine the two, whether it’s by participating in a weeklong yoga retreat in some remote locale or simply weaving a few classes into your trip itinerary, you’ll reap the rewards. That said, travel is also a chance to try new things. Instead of shavasana in a run-of-the-mill studio that could be anywhere in the world, seek out yoga experiences that provide an original take on the ancient practice. Think kitten yoga and silent disco yoga—more on both below.

In honor of September, also known as National Yoga Month, we put together a handful of unique yoga classes offered at select Benchmark Hotels & Resorts properties around the country. Read on to see which one piques your interest the most.

Kitten Yoga at Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa: Vero Beach, Florida

Animal yoga has officially made its way into the chat. A form of yoga that combines traditional poses with the therapeutic aspects of interacting with animals, it’s about playfulness, creativity, deep breathing, and forming a connection with another living being. At Costa d'Este Beach Resort & Spa in Vero Beach, Florida, animal yoga comes in the form of a “paws and pose” practice.

The morning starts with a 30-minute, beginner-welcome yoga session, where kittens from H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue join the fun. As you go into a pigeon pose or downward dog, an adorable (and adoptable!) kitten may scuttle between your limbs. The following half hour is dedicated to cuddles with the kittens and complemented by bottomless mimosas. Tickets start at $40 per person, and $10 from each one sold is donated to H.A.L.O.

Even when kitten yoga isn’t on the agenda at the waterfront resort, guests can still practice yoga in a gorgeous place. Sunrise yoga takes place on the beach every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning at 7 a.m.

Poolside Punawai Stretch at Wayfinder Waikiki: Honolulu, Hawaii

While there are endless pros of travel, there is one major con: tightness. Sitting on a plane or in a car for hours can cause your muscles to stiffen, leading to soreness and discomfort. Of all the antidotes to this problem, stretching is one of the most effective (and easily accessible).

After landing in Honolulu and checking into your room at the boutique Wayfinder Waikiki, you can certainly stretch on your own…but you’re also welcome to join Poolside Punawai Stretch. The weekly class happens on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The instructor practices a stretching approach to yoga, one that focuses on harmonizing your movement and breath. "Punawai" is a Hawaiian word that translates to “fountain,” “well,” or “spring,” and the class aims to serve as a “wellspring of rejuvenation” for participants. Any remaining plane stiffness will surely see itself out.

Yogalates at The Wigwam: Litchfield Park, Arizona

Thanks to its restorative dry climate, warm temperatures, and the area’s connection to Indigenous healing practices, Arizona has become a destination known for its wellness culture. Case in point: The Wigwam. One of the best spa resorts in the Grand Canyon State, The Wigwam has an impressive roster of fitness classes, including two yoga-adjacent offerings.

Yogalates is described as a “classic infusion of yoga and pilates,” and it works on improving core strength and posture as well as stretching. Piyo classes are slightly different—although the core still plays a key role in them. In these pilates-meets-yoga programs, participants engage in dynamic bodyweight strength-training, flexibility, and balance exercises.

Silent Disco Yoga at The Shores Resort & Spa: Daytona Beach, Florida

Sound and movement are both powerful forces in their own ways. The former is a type of energy that can shift moods, reduce stress, and improve focus. The latter can connect us to rhythm and flow. Silent Disco Yoga at The Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach, Florida, combines both seamlessly.

In a moonlight, beachside ceremony, guests are introduced to sound healing through silent disco headphones. Throughout the experience, they’re asked to release what doesn’t serve them anymore—all while dancing, practicing breathwork, embracing the art of a ritual, and mirroring the energies of the waning and new moon. The Shore’s next Silent Disco workshop is slated for September 21.
