4 Ways to Reset Your Routine With the Changing Light

Every spring and fall, daylight saving time turns our clocks—and sleep schedules—into a hot topic of conversation. But whether daylight saving time stays or goes, one thing won't change: daylight fluctuates with the seasons, prompting us to reconsider our daily routines. A vacation is the perfect place to experiment with a different rhythm this fall as the days shorten. Instead of fighting the changing light, follow it with these restorative experiences across the country.

Go Where the Clocks Already Stay Put

Want to avoid the time-change shuffle altogether? Hawaii and most of Arizona don't observe daylight saving time: Hawaii's tropical latitude keeps daylight relatively consistent, while Arizona avoids extending summer sunlight into already scorching evenings. Both destinations are perfect for travelers seeking a steadier rhythm—and plenty of wellness rituals.

In Hawaii, Wayfinder Waikiki offers poolside Punawai Breathing & Stretching, a gentle practice combining mindful movement and breathwork. In Arizona, Paradise Valley's Mountain Shadows provides complimentary fitness programming ranging from reformer Pilates to deep-stretch yoga. In Litchfield Park, The Wigwam offers sunrise yoga and pool-based Hydro Fit. And in Scottsdale, Hotel Valley Ho invites guests to unwind with a spa treatment and a visit to its chromotherapy saunas.

Begin Again With the Morning Light

There's something optimistic about watching the sky brighten each morning—especially when the sun rises over the sea. Costa d'Este Beach Resort & Spa is perfectly positioned in Vero Beach, Florida, to indulge in a barefoot walk along the sand under the pastel hues of dawn or Sunrise Yoga overlooking the water. Gentle movement, mindful breathing, and the sound of the waves make it easier to ease into the morning. And because sunrise arrives later in fall (well, until the clocks go back, that is), guests can catch the show without setting an especially punishing vacation alarm.

Embrace the Earlier Darkness

An earlier sunset doesn't have to signal the end of the day. It can open an entirely different window for exploration—one filled with planets, constellations, and meteor showers. Plus, the shift makes stargazing more accessible for travelers who would rather not wait until late at night to look up.

Black Rock Mountain Resort in Utah's Wasatch Mountains sits minutes from Jordanelle State Park, which has been designated an International Dark Sky Park. Depending on the season, the park hosts night-sky programming such as star parties and guided celestial viewing. Guests can also return to Black Rock to cozy up beside an outdoor fire and continue watching the wide-open sky.

Trade Screen Time for Green Time

With more darkness, it's easy to pass the time on the couch with endless scrolling. But resist temptation and trade that harsh blue light for lush greenery—make your way outside to the trees. At Skamania Lodge in Washington's Columbia River Gorge, a self-guided forest-bathing experience leads guests along the Creek Loop Trail with prompts for slowing down and engaging the senses rather than aiming for distance or speed goals. Follow the walk with a soak in the outdoor hot tub or a treatment at Waterleaf Spa to unwind even further.
